[Paint Protection] History of paint protection film - The situation in Japan and US

The History of PPF (The situation in Japan and US)

Paint protection film was developed in the United States, the home of auto detailing. In the United States, where long-distance travel is common, paint chipping due to flying gravel and deterioration of the body due to dents and insects are common problems. Leather covers called "front-end bras" can help solve these problem, and are occasionally seen even in Japan. However, they are not popular because they change the appearance of the vehicle.

The creation of paint protection film

Paint protection film was developed in response to this situation. It can provide a high level of protection while maintaining the vehicle's beauty. Sales began in the United States more than 20 years ago, but initially, installation was highly demanding in terms of both time and skill. First, a pattern had to be made for each part, then the film was cut and installation was performed. However, with the development of pre-cut film for specific models based on data created using computers, the process became much easier, leading to an explosion in demand. Due to the spread of online distribution systems, a majority of vehicles models within the United States now have pre-cut data available, and the number of installations continues to rise. It has even become a standard option for new vehicles.

Current situation in Japan

While paint protection film has been used for 20 years in the United States to protect vehicles and maintain their beauty, it was very rarely sold in Japan until recently. Why is that?

Problem 1:Pre-cut data for Japanese vehicles was not widely available
In Japan, most of the available data was produced overseas. The shortage of people with the expertise required to produce data for Japanese cars was a large factor in this problem.

Problem 2:Lack of information and expertise about film
The difficulty of obtaining information about installation methods and the products themselves created a high barrier to entry.

Problem 3:Unstable supply system (resulting in a high installation price)
Because paint protection film was not manufactured in Japan, it had to be imported from overseas and tended to experience steep price jumps due to the unstable supply. As a result, it was challenging to offer the service for typical Japanese-made vehicles, and installation was largely limited to luxury vehicles and supercars. This situation hindered its widespread adoption.

To overcome these problems and establish paint protection film as a new category of auto detailing in Japan,
UNIGLOBE developed the 「UNIGLOBE Paint Protection System」.
