Paint Protection FAQ

FAQ

  • After installation, will aging eventually cause the film to discolor or differ in color from the painted surface?

Discoloration can be minimized through appropriate care, but it cannot be entirely prevented due to the physical properties involved.
Parts of the body where film is applied are protected and will remain in beautiful condition, but parts without film deteriorate due to various factors. This can result in a difference in color. Of course, the film itself may also yellow, harden or otherwise deteriorate over time due to various influences.

  • How long will the film last after installation?

Paint protection film will gradually deteriorate after installation. At some point in that process, it will need to be removed and replaced with a new film. There are two ways of looking at durability: how long the protective effects last, and how long until the appearance starts to deteriorate.
In terms of its protective effects, if the vehicle is, for example, parked in an indoor garage and only used on weekends, it has been confirmed that the film's performance will last for about five years. If parked outside, driven long distances or used very frequently, it will deteriorate more quickly, sometimes in as little as two or three years. In terms of aesthetic appearance, too, if parked in an indoor garage and only used on weekends, the film has been confirmed to last for five years. If parked outside, driven long distances or used very frequently, the appearance may deteriorate in one to two years.
Because protective performance and aesthetic appearance are both essential aspects of protection film, for UNIGLOBE, we recommend replacing the film every two to three years, similar to the interval for vehicle inspections. The number of years is only a guideline. We recommend replacing the film after confirming its actual condition, which will vary depending on the usage environment and damage incurred.

  • Can parts with film applied and parts without film applied be distinguished visually?

Paint protection film is often described as "invisible." Immediately after installation, you will not be able to see any difference between parts with and without film unless you look for the edge of the film up close. However, because paint protection film has a thickness of 150μ (~0.15mm), it is not completely invisible.

  • How should the film be maintained after installation?

After installation, once the film is secured in place, it adheres to the surface very strongly. As such, no special measures are required for routine car washing. As with maintenance of body coatings, it is sufficient to simply wash the vehicle with shampoo in the normal manner.
However, we believe that applying a coating to the film is indispensable for reducing water stains and generally making maintenance easier. For that reason, we offer coatings specifically developed for paint protection film. A general purpose wax or oil-based coating is not suitable because it will cause the protective layer itself to oxidize and contaminants to adhere to the surface.

  • Is it possible to install paint protection film on vehicles that are not new?

When installing film on used vehicles, it is necessary to first restore the painted surface to the same condition as a new vehicle. Generally, installation is possible when that has been done, but caution is especially necessary for non-original paintwork.
Paint protection film is intended to be removed and replaced every few years. If the vehicle has non-original paint due to repairs after an accident during installation, full repainting, installation of third-party parts or another reason, in rare cases where the quality of that paintwork is low, removing the film may also cause the paint itself to peel off. The same applies to fiber reinforced plastic parts and other resin parts that have low adhesion to the paint.
The condition of the vehicle must be thoroughly examined before installation, and instructions should be given to the customer when performing installation.

  • Where can film be installed?

Paint protection film cannot be applied to all parts of the vehicle. For example, due to insufficient adhesive force, film cannot be installed on unpainted resin parts lacking smoothness (such as the bumper of a commercial vehicle), parts of the paint with orange peel, or parts with chipping coats on the lower part of the vehicle. Of course, it cannot be applied to the windshield in accordance with the law, but installation on most painted surfaces or plastic lenses is possible.
