External Factors Affecting Paint
Among the fundamentals of painting knowledge, we mentioned that automotive paints are cross-linked resinous paints. There are many external factors which can break down those strong cross-links and damage a car’s paint in the environments in which they are used. Among those factors are those which can be resolved within the scope of car detailing work, but there are also some factors which cause fatal, unrecoverable damage.
Water
The most common adhesive substance, water cannot currently be guarded against completely. No matter how incredible a paint one applies, it is physically impossible to prevent water spots.
Pollen
This phenomenon of countless small spots is seen most commonly during the cedar pollen season.
Yellow sand
As its name implies, “yellow sand” is a type of sand. As it is dispersed through the atmosphere, it absorbs and reacts chemically with various particles. It remains as a residue atop the paint, temporarily reducing water repellency and causing ion deposits.
Bird droppings
Various species of bird drop their excreta which adheres to the paint, causing the paint layer to swell with fluid and crack or peel.
Acid rain
Acid rain caused by air pollution forms a residue on the paint, causing cavities to form. This occurs most commonly on flat surfaces where water can pool.
Iron dust
Iron dust is produced in a variety of ways, such as from brake dust, construction, railways, or ironworks. When driving or parked near such locations, the iron dust is dispersed into the air and adheres to the paint layer.
